#1 Method to Sight Read

Sight reading on the guitar can be one of the most frustrating and tedious aspects of learning the instrument. The guitar fretboard is in many ways, illogical. The same note can often be played in many places around the fretboard, leading to a lot of possibilities that can overwhelm us. This is different to most other instruments, which can only play one note in one place (like the piano, flute, harp, etc.)

So why should we even bother learning how to read music on guitar? This is almost like asking why we should learn to read our native language. Reading music gives us several benefits that don’t come easily without reading:

  1. Expand your repertoire: It allows you to read virtually any piece of music, whether you know it or not.

  2. Understand music: It helps you see patterns and closely examine music in a way that’s difficult to do through listening alone.

  3. Play together: Reading music opens up the possibility to play ensemble music. If you can sight read this well, then there is tremendous fun in playing together!
